In accordance with Heidelberg University Library and the Gesellschaft für Turkologie, Osmanistik und Türkeikunde (GTOT e. V.), the database "Turkologischer Anzeiger Online", which was originally developed at Heidelberg University, will be continued and prospectively expanded by the Fachinformationsdienst Nahost-, Nordafrika- und Islamstudien (FID), at University and State Library Saxony-Anhalt from 2023.
The Turkology Annual
The Turkologische Anzeiger/Turkology Annual (TA), founded by Andreas Tietze (†) and György Hazai (†), is the most important systematic bibliography for Turkology and Ottoman Studies. Experts from all over the world are involved in its compilation. Published by the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Vienna, the volumes were previously available only in printed form.
Turkology Annual Online
As part of a project at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University, the first 26 TA volumes have been digitized and all entries were made available in an online database with search options until 2021. At the FID, a new database with corresponding functionalities was set up in 2023 analogous to the original project and the previous content was made visible as well as searchable. In the meantime, the contents of volumes 27-30 have also been added according to the existing category scheme.
Because the TA volumes included entries in many different languages, including transcriptions from Arabic and from languages with Cyrillic alphabets, full-text recognition (OCR) posed significant challenges to the original project. Individual entries sometimes consisted of sections in different languages. However, the results proved to be very satisfactory in most cases (also as a result of subsequent fine-tuning). The syntax analysis (parsing) of the TA entries posed a bigger problem, since the different entry types and their data structures are often only implicitly marked and some of them change from volume to volume.
